2011 Press Releases
Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android Protects From a Targeted Surge of Web Threats and Cybercriminals
ORLANDO, FL – EMBAROED TILL - March 22, 2011 - Trend Micro™ Mobile Security for Android™ was initially launched at Showstoppers during CES in January 2011. Also in January Trend Micro's Chairman, Steve Chang, commented that Google's Android operating system appeared to be more susceptible to hacker attacks and viruses. Since January, mobile threats have continued with the Android platform seemingly becoming a favorite of attackers.
In March, Google pulled nearly 50 malware infected repackaged versions of legitimate Android apps from the Android Market - AndroidOS_LOTOOR.A This malicious code steals mobile device information and gives unauthorized users root access to an infected device. The Android platform is the second largest mobile platform on the market today with a growth rate of over 850 percent.
Trend Micro, a long-time innovator in mobile security, continues to strive to protect consumers from the newest threats in mobile technology by offering Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android, a solution that scans downloaded apps for malware and conceived to provide a safe surfing experience for online banking and shopping on Android devices. The security application is designed to identify and stop cybercriminals and online threats before they can attack.
Requiring little space and specifically built for Android devices, Trend Micro Mobile Security provides the protection and freedom consumers need to stay mobile. Currently, Trend Micro is the only company known to use cloud-based security intelligence to protect Android devices from the latest threats. Custom filtering lists enable users to screen or block unwanted calls or messages, while Web reputation and parental controls help make mobile surfing safer for everyone.
“The Android app ecosystem is by definition open,” says Rik Ferguson, Director of Security Research & Communications, Trend Micro. “There is a wide array of app stores available and apps are therefore ready for use by the user community in minutes. This greater openness of the developer environment has arguably fostered an atmosphere of creativity, but as Facebook has already discovered it can also be a very attractive criminal playground.”
Backed by the Trend Micro™Smart Protection Network™ infrastructure and Trend Micro's 20-year history of protecting customers from identity theft, data loss and other web threats, Trend Micro Mobile Security users receive unique, real-time and instant browser protection wherever they take their Android mobile device.
